Temkula Mayor resigns after accusations of racism

Temkula: After allegations of racism surfaced this week, James "Stu" Stewart has announced Thursday night that he is resigning with immediate effect as a Temkula Mayor and member of the Temkula City Council. Stewart has stated that some community members resented the text messages he sent to police about the vandalism, which is why he has taken this step.

Stewart said in his resignation statement, "I apologize to all, including our citizens of all backgrounds and ethnicities, city staff and my respected colleagues in the City Council." "You have every right to be hurt and angry. My typo and off-the-cuff response to an email on a serious subject added to the pain at a time where our community, and our country, is suffering. I'm not the best writer and I sometimes say anything, but I'm not racist. I regret this mistake very much and I completely take it. I am truly sorry."

Stewart said, "I understand that even my sincere apology cannot cure this situation. Because the action speaks louder than words, I am immediately resigning from your post of Mayor and City Council Member . It has been a true honor for this great city and its service. My love for Temkula and its inhabitants is beyond expression. "
