Chennai: M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has written a letter to Pinarayi Vijayan, the Chief Minister of Kerala, urging him to order Kerala irrigation officials to keep the water level at Siruvani dam at maximum capacity. In a letter dated 1st February, Stalin stated that this was done to provide a consistent supply of water to the Coimbatore corporation and neighbouring districts. In the letter, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said that despite heavy rains in the past three years, the Kerala irrigation department had kept the dam level at 877 metres instead of its maximum capacity of 878.50 metres. Stalin stated that this was hurting Coimbatore Corporation's regular water supply and causing drinking water concerns in Coimbatore and the adjacent areas. He said that by lowering the storage level by 1.5m, only 85 MLD of water instead of 101.40 MLD could be supplied. Despite repeated appeals from Tamil Nadu officials, Stalin claims that Kerala irrigation officials have failed to take steps to keep the Siruvani dam at full capacity. Stalin said, Kerala and Tamil Nadu agreed in 1973 to supply Coimbatore with 1.30 tmc yearly (from July 1 to June 30) from the Siruvani dam for 99 years.
