Watch! New Parliament Building Inauguration: Key Highlights

NEW DELHI: On Sunday, May 28, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla will officially open the new Parliament building. There will be two parts to the inauguration ceremony. 

 

The rites leading up to the inauguration would start early in the day and most likely take place under a pandal (canopy) next to the Gandhi statue in Parliament. The ceremony is expected to include participation from PM Modi, LS Speaker Om Birla, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Hariwansh, and a few top government ministers.

How will the new Parliament building be opened?

#Puja: After the pujas, the dignitaries will tour the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha chambers in the new structure. 

#Sengol:  After conducting a few rites, it is expected that the holy "Sengol" would be placed in the Lok Sabha chamber, exactly next to the Speaker's chair. Priests from Tamil Nadu, including the original jeweller who designed it, will be present.

#NationalAnthem:  The morning portion of the celebration will complete at around 9:30 am, and the second leg is scheduled to start at noon with the singing of the national anthem in the Lok Sabha chamber in front of all the dignitaries, including Prime Minister Modi.

#Dignitireis:  The Deputy Rajya Sabha Chairman, Hariwansh, will make a speech during the opening ceremony and read a written message of congratulations from Rajya Sabha Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankar. On this occasion, President Droupadi Murmu will also read a written message. A number of NDA parties, including the AIADMK, Apna Dal, Republican Party of India, Shinde faction of Shiv Sena, NPP, and NPF, have indicated that they will attend the event on Sunday. Those invited to the new building's opening include Bimal Patel, the primary architect of the new parliament building, and Ratan Tata, a well-known industrialist whose company TATA built the new structure. #AudioVidio:  In reality, two brief audio-video films will be shown as well so that the dignitaries in attendance can discuss the new parliament's construction process, building, and significance.

#Opposition:  Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition party, is not expected to attend the ceremony on Sunday, though, since a number of opposition groups including the Congress party have declared a boycott of the event. On the other hand, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha has also been given time to speak on the occasion.   

#CoinStamp: In addition to releasing a coin and stamp in honour of the historic occasion, PM Modi will also deliver a speech, which will be followed by the Secretary-General Lok Sabha's Vote of Thanks.
