NEW DELHI: A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Supreme Court on May 25 seeking a direction that the new Parliament building should be inaugurated by the President of India. The Petitioner also claimed that Lok Sabha Secretariat violated the Constitution by not inviting the President for the inauguration.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the new Parliament building: This comes days after it was announced that the newly constructed Parliament building will be inaugurated by PM Modi Modi on Sunday. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met Prime Minister Modi last Thursday inviting him to inaugurate the New Parliament Building.

According to an announcement from the Lok Sabha, the nation's capital's New Parliament Building is now complete and symbolizes India's spirit of independence. As per the current needs, the building was experiencing a space shortage. The productivity of the members' working was being hampered by the lack of convenient MP sitting arrangements in both Houses, according to the announcement. The current Parliament building, which will soon turn 100 years old, was finished in 1927.

The Centre has sent an invitation to all current members of both chambers of parliament, as well as to ministers, secretaries, chief ministers, and executives of Union territories.

The opposition will not attend the occasion: However, up to 20 parties, including Trinamool Congress, Congress, CPI, and AAP, have said that they will not attend the event.

"The inauguration of a new Parliament building is a momentous occasion," the opposition parties declared in a joint statement. Despite the fact that we think the administration is endangering democracy and that we disagree with the dictatorial way the new Parliament was established, we were willing to set aside our differences and celebrate this milestone. However, Prime Minister Modi’s determination to inaugurate the new Parliament building by himself, completely sidelining President  Droupadi Murmu, is not only a grave insult but a direct assault on our democracy which demands a commensurate response."

A total of 20 political parties decided to abstain from the inauguration, further escalating the heated political climate around it. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, opposed the decision to have Prime Minister Narendra Modi, rather than President Droupadi Murmu, inaugurate the new Parliament building, which sparked the issue. Rahul Gandhi's remarks marked the start of a flurry of criticism from the opposition. The parties claimed that the President, the Rajya Sabha (Council of States), and the Lok Sabha (House of the People) together make up the Parliament.
