Nag Panchami: Why Vasuki stays on Shiva's neck?

Many festivals come in the month of Sawan. This includes major festivals like Rakshabandhan, Hariyali Teej, Hariyali Amavasya. The festival of Nag Panchami also comes in this holy month of Sawan, which is dedicated to the Nag Devta. The history of the Nag Devta is quite ancient and religious. Lord Shiva also wears Vasuki around his neck, but have you ever wondered why Nag Devta always remains in the neck of Lord Shiva?

When Lord Shiva and other deities did Samudra Manthan, Nag Devta was used as a rope to churn the sea.  Vasuki is a devotee of Shiva and pleased with this, Lord Shiva asked him to stay on his neck as an ornament. This was gladly accepted by Vasuki.

Every year Panchami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Sawan month is celebrated as Nag Panchami. Nag Devta is considered the lord of Panchami Tithi and this Panchami of Sawan remains dedicated to him.

Nag Devta is worshipped on the day of Nag Panchami. There is also a tradition of feeding the Nag Devta on this day. In temples or houses, the Nag Devta is duly worshipped and a Nag idol or picture is also made at the main door of the house on this day. Many people observe fast on this day. After fasting for a time on Chaturthi Tithi, after worshipping Nagpanchami on Panchami Tithi, fast is opened in the evening.
