Rampur: MP from Rampur Lok Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh, who has been declared 'land mafia' and senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan, was getting pension every month as a 'democracy fighter', on which now the Yogi government put ban. In the name of Azam Khan and his trust, there are properties worth crores and many illegal constructions and occupied lands. He is facing several criminal cases. He was separately raising 20,000 rupees per month as 'democracy fighter pension', which has been stopped. During the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government in 1975, a provision was made to provide monthly pension to the jailed leaders by giving them the status of 'democracy fighter', which Azam Khan was also benefiting from. In 2005, the Uttar Pradesh government declared him a 'democracy fighter' and arranged a pension for him. Mulayam Singh Yadav, who founded the SP at that time, was in Lucknow. Initially, 500 rupees were received every month under this pension, but later it was increased to Rs 20,000. It is being said that the UP government has banned pension due to him in many cases. During the Emergency, Azam Khan was associated with the Students Union at Aligarh Muslim University and was jailed. He opposed the Congress government.
