Imphal: The Manipur assembly elections are considered to be very important for Congress. For Congress, this election is not limited to a defeat-win in the Manipur election alone, but important for the entire Northeast. Because the Manipur elections will also have an impact on the assembly elections in other north-eastern states to be held in the year 2023.

At one time, the North East used to be a Congress stronghold. In 2015, Congress was in power in five of the eight northeastern states. But, in the last seven years, Congress lost one by one to all the state BJP and its allies. At present, Congress is only in the role of the main opposition party in Assam. In Manipur, Congress was in power for 15 consecutive years. In the 2017 assembly elections too, Congress had emerged as the single largest party by winning 28 seats. However, it failed to form the government and the BJP formed the government along with regional parties Naga People's Front, National People's Party and Lok Janshakti Party.

In the last five years, 13 Congress MLAs have resigned and joined the BJP. In Meghalaya too, several Congress MLAs have joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC). In Assam too, several MLAs have resigned from the Congress and joined the BJP. In such a situation, the Manipur Assembly elections become very important for Congress. The Congress is contesting the Manipur Progressive Secular Alliance this time in alliance with the Left and the JD(S). A senior party leader said that the party's position in the elections has been strengthened after the secular alliance. But what will be the benefit of this to the party, it will be known only on March 10.
