New Delhi: War has already begun in Russia and Ukraine and after carrying out a series of attacks, Russia is now asking Ukrainian troops to surrender. In such a situation, Ukraine is requesting all the major powers around the world to stop Russia. It has also appealed to the Indian government to put pressure on Russia. The government led by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged India to hold talks with Russia for peace, saying India has a good relationship with Russia.

On Thursday (February 24, 2022), Ukraine's Ambassador to India Igor Polikha requested PM Modi to play a key role in reducing tensions with Russia, saying PM Modi and Volodymyr Putin respect each other. In fact, Ukraine is acknowledging India's influence and wants PM Modi to intervene in it. Before we talk about Ukraine, it is important to know the relationship between the two countries. Because, earlier, Ukraine's relations with India were not good. When India conducted the nuclear test, Ukraine was among the countries that strongly opposed India's nuclear tests in 1998 and condemned India's move to the Security Council after the 1998 nuclear test.

It may be recalled that in 1998, the Government of India led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee surprised the whole world by conducting five nuclear tests named 'Operation Shakti'. During that time, Ukraine along with 25 other countries strongly condemned India's nuclear tests and voted in favour of United Nations (UN) Resolution 1172. The resolution passed at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), demanded that India stop its nuclear tests and sign the NPT and CTBT. The resolution also asked India to stop nuclear programmes, stop the development and production of ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. In all this, Ukraine supported the UN.

Today we are all saying that Ukraine is facing a big crisis because of the Russian invasion. In fact, Ukraine wants to live with its powerful friends, but the US is also not able to help it in Russia's case. Ukraine, which stood up against India's security needs about 22 years ago, today wants India to stand by it. At the same time, if we talk about Russia, then India has had important defence deals with it, and Russia has always stood with India.
