New Delhi: Three thermal power stations in Punjab, four in Kerala and 13 in Maharashtra have been reported closed. All of them are said to have been closed due to a shortage of coal. Let me tell you all that fearing a possible power crisis, the Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Punjab have requested the Centre to increase the supply of coal to their States. On the other hand, Maharashtra's energy department has urged citizens to save electricity. Let me tell all of you that the Government of Kerala has also issued a warning.

It has been said that they may have to resort to load-shedding. Let me tell all of you that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene so that coal and gas can be diverted to power supply plants. On the other hand, Union Energy Minister RK Singh has said that there is no shortage of electricity in Delhi. Last Sunday, he assured that the supply of coal will continue. He says the country is four days ahead of the average coal requirement every day and an unnecessary panic is being created on this issue.

He also said that the states certainly seem to be nervous but the Centre believes there is no need to worry. According to the central electricity authority of India data, the country is facing an unprecedented shortage of coal reserves in thermal plants, which could lead to a power crisis. Out of 135 thermal plants using coal for power generation on 5th October, 106 were in the critical or supercritical phase.

This means that they had stock only for the next 6-7 days. Union Power Minister RK Singh said, "I have asked Gas Authority of India Limited to continue supplying essential quantities of gas to power stations across the country. They have assured me that the supply will continue. There was neither shortage of gas nor will it happen in future.''
