Chiyaan Vikram’s Dhill has completed 20 years since release. The action drama, which hit screens on July 2001, was directed by Dharani and had Vikram and Laila playing lead roles. The film did so well at the Box office and bagged many awards that it was remade in Telugu as Sreeram, in Kannada as Sye and in Hindi as Dum. 

01 Vikram’s action avatar

Vikram played an aspiring police officer Kanagavel in the film. To appear in a trim avatar as a cop, Vikram went on a strict diet and employed a body builder to train him. This was also the first film in which Vikram was credited as Chiyaan. 

02 Laila and Vikram’s chemistry

This was the first time that Vikram and Laila were teaming up for a film and their chemistry was an instant hit. They later worked together in Pithamagan as well, although she was paired opposite Suriya in the film. 

03 Ashish Vidyarthi’s ‘mean’ debut

The film marked the Kollywood debut of Ashish Vidyarthi who appeared as the corrupt police officer Encounter Shankar. After his appearance in Dhill, he went on to sign a number of films in Tamil, especially in negative roles.

04 Vidyasagar music, a major hit

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the music of Dhill was a super hit. Vidyasagar bagged the Best Music Director award in the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for 2001. Singers Unnikrishnan and Sujatha won the Best Awards for Best Playback Singer Male and Female respectively for the song, Un Samayal Araiyil.
