New Delhi: On the 20th anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the security people who died in the attack, saying the nation would be eternally grateful for their tremendous sacrifice.

"I pay tribute to the heroic security people who gave their lives on this day in 2001, defending the world's largest democracy's Parliament from a heinous terrorist attack. For their tremendous sacrifice, the nation would be eternally grateful "President Ram Nath Kovind sent out a tweet.

"I pay my respects to all security professionals who died in the course of duty during the 2001 Parliament attack. Every person is inspired by their service to the country and supreme sacrifice "In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi stated.

Five heavily armed terrorists from the terror groups Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) entered the Parliament complex in New Delhi on December 13, 2001, and began fire indiscriminately.

The incident killed around 14 persons, including security personnel and one civilian. The terror attack happened around 40 minutes after Parliament had adjourned, and there were about 100 people in the premises at the time.
