Kochi: Bird flu has also entered the country amid the growing threat of a new variant Omicron of coronavirus. Three cases have been registered at Kottayam in Kerala. The cases have come to light in Vechur, Aymanam and Kallar panchayats of Kottayam district. The killing of chickens and other birds has been started on a large scale from Wednesday. 

Last week a case of bird flu also came to light in The Neighbouring District of Alappuzha in Kottayam. After the large-scale death of chickens in Alappuzha, it was feared that they had not died of bird flu. Later this apprehension proved to be true. Local authorities have said that the killing of ducks and other birds will start on Wednesday to prevent the spread of the virus. He said about 25,000 birds would be killed.

In view of the situation, government officials have alerted the concerned department. Teams have been pressed into work to kill chickens and other birds in areas where bird flu cases have been reported. As directed by the Central Government, if a case of bird flu is found, 28,500 to 35,000 birds are killed. Rs. 100 for a hen under 60 days of age and Rs. 200 for a hen larger than that is provided by the government to the poultry.
