Ahmedabad: Four more accused have been arrested by the police in connection with the mass conversion of 37 Hindu families and 100 Hindu tribals in the Kankaria village of Bharuch district of Gujarat. Gujarat Police on Thursday (28 April 2022) arrested Abdul Samad Dawood Patel (Bakerywala), Shabbir Mohammad Patel (Bakeriwala), Hassan Ibrahim Patel (Tisli) and Ismail Yakub Patel (Delawala), residents of Amod taluka of Bharuch. A total of 14 people have been arrested in this case so far.
Bharuch SP Leena Patil said, "We have arrested four other accused. We will take their statements and collect evidence. Earlier, 10 accused were arrested in the case. In this case, police Gujarat has registered a case under Section 4 of the Freedom for Religion Act and sections 120(b), 153(b)(c), and 506(2). Earlier, the Gujarat High Court had on April 4, 2022, rejected the anticipatory bail plea of an Islamic cleric named Waryawa Abdul Wahab Mahmood in a case of greed and forced conversion of people to Muslims. Mahmood was assisted by 5 other accused Shabbirbhai, Samadbhai, Abdul Aziz, Yusuf and Ayyub to spread his conversion agenda. The accused, Mahmood, had sought anticipatory bail in connection with an FIR lodged at Amod police station in Bharuch town of Gujarat on November 15, 2021, last year.''
On November 15, 100 people from 37 tribal families were lured into Muslims by Abdul Aziz Patel, Yusuf Jiwan Patel, Ayub Barkat Patel and Ibrahim Punabhai Patel of Kakaria village under Amod taluka of Bharuch district. At the same time, he had also threatened to face dire consequences if he returned to Hinduism. After converting the converted Hindu tribals to Islam, they were tasked with converting others of the community to Islam as well.
