During the pandemic, an approximate number of 2 lakh migrant workers left from Coimbatore to their natives in different parts of the country. The closure of industries and the lockdown is the reason to leave Coimbatore. In the past one month, around 47000 migrant workers have returned the district. As per the data shared by the district revenue department, the workers started returning after the governments of States (of origin and destination) and the Centre, started announcing unlock plans Subsequently in unlock 3.0, 4,0 and 5.0.
"The returnees took various modes of transport to return, with the prominent ones being rail and road," an official said. The district administration has instructed all the industries to keep compulsory seven-day isolation before engaging the migrant workers for work. In a meeting with the industry representatives, on Thursday, Collector K Rajamani issued the orders about compulsory isolation and directed them to ensure strict adherence to Covid-19 guidelines on the industrial premises.
A team comprising of civic body officials and the authorities from revenue and health departments, would be monitoring the industries on a regular basis. "The initiative has been taken to check whether the rules are being followed on the ground. Strict action will be taken against any industry which is found flouting the norms," quoted the collector. From the industry side, a plea was made to the collector, requesting him to sought a one-time warning against any erring industry.
