New Delhi: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on Mangalwar (April 12, 2022) has sought clarifications on 824 vacant posts of principals in government schools in the national capital. In a letter to Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Dev, the NCPCR said a team led by chairman Priyank Kanoongo visited several schools in Delhi and found faults in infrastructure and other aspects. It further said that most of the schools inspected by the team did not have a head of school (HoS). This post was vacant.

The NCPCR said that a total of 1027 schools fall under the education department of the NCT government. Of these, only 203 have a headmaster or acting headmaster. It further reads, "The role of a headmaster or principal is very important in ensuring a positive learning environment for quality education in schools and in developing an inclusive culture. The presence of the headmaster or principal has an impact on the safety and well-being of the children.'' The letter, quoting the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, said that in schools where the number of students from classes 6 to 8 is more than 100, there should be a full-time principal in the school. The NCPCR has asked the chief secretary to share factual positions regarding the vacancies of such posts and the action taken by the education department till April 19.
In another letter to the chief secretary, the NCPCR said BJP MP Manoj Tiwari visited Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Sabzi Mandi, Timarpur, Delhi. Here he saw many problems related to cleanliness in the school building. The apex body said that such things can lead to serious accidents in the school. The letter states that 'In view of the gravity of the matter, your office is requested to take immediate action in this matter and the action taken report in this regard may be shared with the Commission within seven days of the receipt of this letter.'
