GURUGRAM: As many as 93 animals have died in Gurugram after contracting the lumpy virus, and 890 cases of the contagious disease have been found among cattle in the Gurugram, Sohna, and Pataudi areas, the district's animal husbandry department officials said.

Although the Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is fast spreading, neither from animals nor through cow milk, said the officials. However, according to Dr. Punita Gahlawat, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry and Dairy, approximately 71,000 cattle in Gurugram have been vaccinated to protect them from the virus.

Gahlawat urged owners to segregate cattle exhibiting lumpy virus symptoms, which include, among others, high fever, decreased milk output, skin nodules, loss of appetite, increased nasal discharge, and watery eyes. "The number of cases is small and controllable in Gurugram. We took immediate action and all required measures to stop the disease's spread "She said.

An infectious viral disease known as lumpy skin disease infects cattle and is transmitted through direct contact with mosquitoes, flies, lice, wasps, and other flying insects as well as tainted food and water. The virus attack can be lethal and involves nodules on the skin and fever.

She said that the state's Animal Husbandry Department is taking the required action to stop the infection and protect the cattle from the devastating virus. We have also given instructions to the concerned daily owners and others to take the appropriate vigilance to protect animals from the sick cattle and to notify the department if they feel any cattle may have been infected. Wherever cases of the virus emerged, we increased vaccination efforts," she added.
