Whether it is the bond between Lord Krishna and Sudama or our adorable cartoon characters Scooby Doo and Shaggy. Friendship is a relationship that has been cherished since ancient time. From Bible to Ramayana, all our holy books have some or the other instances of friendship. One person with whom you are close after your family is undoubtedly your friend. That warm feeling, sense of comfort, silly fights, arguments and that love after the patch-up. Aren't all these feelings amazing? Friends are someone whom you can completely rely on. You know they are there no matter what goes wrong with your life. Human beings cannot survive without friendship and by this, it doesn't mean it is just a bond between two humans. It can also be a friendship between a human and an animal or a person befriending nature.

Actually, friendship is something which we seriously need in our lives. We have confined our idea of friendship. Imagine how peaceful would be the world if warring nations become friends or two cultures come together. Won't this would be a beautiful place to live in? On this Friendship Day, let's commemorate this special relationship that is the source of our happiness.

What date do we celebrate Friendship Day?
Though most of the countries celebrate Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August, in April 2011, the United Nations marked the 30th July as International Friendship Day. Friendship Day is not celebrated on first Sunday of August all around the globe and this is because all countries have different histories. While most of the nations like India and USA celebrate it on the first Sunday of August, others like Peru celebrate it on the first Saturday in July. In Argentina, Friendship Day is celebrated on 20 July.

Friendship Day History
In order to honour the beautiful relation of friendship, in 1998 Nane Annan, wife of Secretary-General Kofi Annan at United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as the world's Ambassador of Friendship. However, its history dates back to the 30s when the founder of Hallmark cars, Joyce Hall promoted Friendship Day so that people can wish each other by exchanging cards. It was initially intended to be 2nd August. In the1920s, the day was also promoted by the greeting card National Association but it was taken harshly for being a commercial gimmick.

The idea of a World Friendship Day was first proposed by Dr Ramon Artemio Bracho on 20 July 1958 while he was having dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco, Paraguay. The World Friendship Crusade was established as a result of this meeting.

You can celebrate Friendship Day by exchanging flowers, gifts, card or whatever you or your friend likes. Well, if you are the one who doesn't believe in materialistic things, then even a warm hug and kiss will serve the purpose.

Happy Friendship Day to all!
