Regarding social media, the government has taken strict action against the illegal URL in the area. The government has found many such URLs which were running illegally. Based on the request from Indian law enforcement agencies, social media companies have blocked many such URLs in the last one-and-a-half years. This action has been done under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the Home Minister Hansraj Ahir disclosed that out of the 2,245 requests sent to social media companies, 1662 have been blocked while acting on the objectionable URL. These include social media companies like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram.
Talking about the figures for 2017 and 2018 (till June) Ahir said that Facebook has the best record in this matter. Nearly 89 per cent of requests sent to shut down objectionable content / URLs to Facebook stopped him from taking action.
Next comes the YouTube. The government has also blocked its 83.5 per cent of illegal URLs. In this case, Instagram and Twitter are far behind. Both of these 44 and 56 per cent of them have been stopped by taking action on illegal URL only.
Ahir said that to prevent illegal items, the recommendations were made from time to time by law enforcement agencies. He said that the central government is committed to shutting down such objectionable URLs and action is also taken from time to time.
