India, Madagascar ink ‘umbrella agreement’ in defense sector

The two countries will have a co-sharing agreement with Air Seychelles through Air India and Air Madagascar.

India and Madagascar have inked an umbrella agreement in the field of defence. Under the agreement, both the countries will see the sights of various ways of co-operation in the field of defence. An amended air service agreement was inked to support efforts towards improving connectivity between both countries.

The two countries will have co-sharing agreement with Air Seychelles through Air India and Air Madagascar.

President Ram Nath Kovind held delegation level talks with his Madagascar counterpart in Anta-nana-rivo. President Kovind announced a donation of 1000 tonnes of rice and a cash grant of 2 million dollars towards multiple calamities assistance in Madagascar.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Madagascar President Rajaonarimampianina jointly launched Center for Geo-informatics Applications in Rural Development in Anta-nana-rivo. The Center has been fully financed by India. This will facilitate Madagascar in getting information about their resources through geo-mapping.

India has extended a $100-million line of credit (LoC) to Mauritius for defence capacity building, as part of its Indian Ocean Region outreach that shed spotlights on maritime security for developing the ‘blue economy’.

Under the agreement publicized on Monday by President, Ramnath Kovind will use the funds to finance the purchase of a multi-purpose offshore patrol vessel from India. The agreement also includes an additional grant component of $5 million.

Madagascar President thanked India for its continued support. The Madagascar President also accorded President Ramnath Kovind with second highest civilian honour Grand Cross.This is the highest honour Madagascar which bestows on a non-citizen.
