Mumbai: Devendra Fadnavis led Maharashtra government on Thursday approved 16 per cent reservation for the Maratha community in the education and job sectors in the state. The Maratha Reports suggested that Reservation Bill is likely to be tabled in the state legislative assembly at 1:30 pm today.

"We have completed a due procedure for the Maratha reservation report and we are bringing out a bill today. But for the Dhangar reservation, we have not completed the report...a sub-committee has been appointed and we will soon table a report," Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated.

The Maharashtra government’s approval on quotas for Marathas comes months ahead of massive protests by members of the community demanding reservation in education and jobs. With this Bharatiya Janata Party-led cabinet played for a potential game-changer ahead of the state assembly elections next year.

Worth mention here earlier this month, the Maharashtra government decided to make a new category called SEBC (socially and economically backward class) with respect to give reservation to Marathas, as per the suggestion of the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission.

The current government has taken the decision to create the new category for Marathas citing 'extraordinary circumstance' so that neither rights of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) nor Marathas are affected.
