Sumatra, an island in Indonesia, witnessed an unusual, interesting and scary event on February 19. A volcano erupted on Mount Sinabung.

A huge and thick hot cloud of ash was thrown up as a result of the 2460 metres high volcano eruption. The hot cloud that arose went in the south and southeastern direction, according to a volcanologist. The natural disaster did not claim any loss of human life an property and no flights were disrupted by it. Indonesian Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency that no casualties were reported.

Mount Sinabung had last erupted in 2010 and this eruption is the biggest one in 2018. Interestingly, Mount Sinabung had been inactive for four centuries before the 2010 volcanic eruption. The ash that emerged from the eruption shot-up to 5000 metres in the sky and travelled southwards.

This case of eruption has claimed no human lives however it did in 2010 and killed two people. It claimed sixteen and seven in 2014 and 2016 eruptions respectively. Such incidents in the past have resulted in migration of around 30,000 people from areas near to the mountain.

Indonesia is located on the famous Pacific “Ring of fire” and has some 120 erupting volcanoes.
