Chandigarh: With a margin of 6,708 votes, Abhay Singh Chautala of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) won the by-election of Ellenabad in BJP-JJP-ruled Haryana on Tuesday. He defeated BJP's Govind Kanda. Pawan Beniwal, a Congress nominee, came in third place and lost his deposits.

Mr. Chautala had a clear advantage over his rivals in an election fought in the shadow of farmers' agitation in a predominantly rural assembly segment, with Ellenabad being the fortress of the Chatuala clan and he having resigned in protest against the three farm laws. Chautala's resignation as a legislator in January, in protest of three central farm laws, necessitated the bypoll. Chautala was re-elected in 2014 and 2019 after winning a by-election in 2010.

Gobind Kanda, the brother of Haryana Lokhit Party chief and legislator Gopal Kanda, had recently joined the BJP. Beniwal, who ran against Chautala in the previous Assembly election and lost, switched to the Congress from the BJP ahead of the bypoll.
