Abhinav Deswal has also won India's second gold medal in shooting at the ongoing 24th Deaf Olympics in the Caxias do Sul, Brazil with the title in men's 10m air pistol. Abhinav, 15, from Roorkee in Uttarakhand and silver medalist Oleksey Lajebnik of Ukraine, had the same 234.2 points after the 24-shot final. Abhinav has also won the gold medal in the shoot-off by collecting 10.3 points against his opponent's 9.7 points. Su Ming Xue of Chinese Taipei has also won a bronze medal.
Abhinav had scored 575 out of 600 points in the 60-shot qualification round to finish second and made it to the final of 8 shooters. Here too he and Kim Kihion had the same points but the Korean has also achieved the top spot by aiming more on the inside 10 points. Another Indian, Shubham Vashisht, who was participating in the event, also made it to the final, finishing sixth with 563 points. He has also been knocked out in the final, finishing sixth.
Abhinav started off slowly in the final. After the first series of five shots, he finished 5th but reached the fourth position after 10 shots. However, his performance showed consistency and continued to move forward with good goals and in the end, he has moved on with Oleksey in the top two positions. In the last two shots, Abhinav was trailing Olexi by 0.6 points but the Indian shooter remained patient and won. India has now bagged 4 medals in the shooting event.
Dhanush Srikanth had won the gold medal in the men's 10m air rifle. Shaurya Saini has bagged a bronze medal in the same event. On Thursday, Vedika Sharma also won a bronze medal in the women's 10m air pistol. India has sent a 65-member contingent for the Deaf Olympics in which 10 shooters are also present.
