New Delhi: On the night of Friday, February 9th, a violent altercation erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) involving students affiliated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Leftist organizations. The confrontation occurred during the annual general body meeting (UGBM) of the university, typically held before student body elections. Representatives from various student groups attended the meeting. According to reports, a heated exchange unfolded between ABVP members and those from leftist groups such as All India Students’ Association and Students’ Federation of India. Subsequently, individuals identified as Leftist students allegedly threatened ABVP members to vacate the premises, followed by physical assaults.

JNU President Umesh Chandra reported that the attackers also directed casteist insults towards tent house workers operating the sound system. Chandra further stated that the assailants utilized a percussion instrument known as 'Dafli' to assault ABVP members. Contrarily, JNU council member Anagha Pradeep asserted that ABVP students disrupted the UGBM and refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU).

Injuries sustained by ABVP members during the altercation prompted their admission to Safdarjung Hospital for medical treatment. ABVP issued a statement condemning the attack, describing JNU as a battleground for ideological supremacy rather than a space for academic discourse. The statement urged immediate action against the perpetrators. As of now, no formal police complaint has been lodged regarding the incident.
