Bengaluru: A few days after a 23-year-old college student was hit by the Nipah virus in Kerala, the Karnataka government has issued an alert in a total of eight districts, including all districts of neighboring Pradesh. Hospital officials have said that the position of the college student, who suffers from Nipah infection, is currently stable. A total of 314 people coming into contact with the infected student are being kept under observation, officials said.

After getting to know about the Nipah infection, the Health Department of Karnataka issued a circular and asked the administration of Chamrajnagar, Masuru, Kodagu, Dakshin Kannada, Uttar Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga and Chikkamangaluru districts to convene a meeting of the Inter-departmental Coordination Committee immediately. These include the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Indian Medical Association and Indian Academy of Pediatric Medicine. Officials in these eight districts have been instructed to keep two isolated beds in the face of a suspect of infection.

The circular asked them to keep each type of equipment ready at all levels. The department has also asked district authorities to instruct government and private hospitals to keep a watch on suspected cases. The districts have also been asked to issue a daily report on the infection of Nipah virus.
