UNITED NATIONS – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has said that recent aid to Ethiopia's Tigray region is insufficient, promising to increase relief deliveries.

Last month, 169 trucks delivering about 4,300 metric tonnes of badly needed assistance materials arrived in Ethiopia's Tigray region, according to the UN organisation, but this is only a small fraction of what is needed.

According to the report, a convoy of 27 trucks carrying approximately 1,000 metric tonnes of food and other essentials arrived in Mekelle, Tigray's regional capital, on April 29-30.

It was the fourth humanitarian convoy to arrive in Tigray since aid transport resumed in early April after a more than three-month hiatus, according to the agency, which also noted that essential services such as electricity, communications networks, and banking remain largely unavailable in the region.

The United Nation and its partners would continue to work with authorities to provide humanitarian supplies to Tigray, including seed and fertiliser, ahead of the vital summer planting season, according to the statement.
