Movie maker Karan Johar started his work in Bollywood as a director with the romantic film 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' which released in 1998. It was his first hit film starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji. However Karan had approached several stars before bringing these stars together, especially tina's character. One of them was Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Karan had earlier offered the role of Rani to Aishwarya.

Karan was a newcomer in Bollywood when she approached Aishwarya Rai for the movie and did only 3 movies. But Aishwarya had rejected Karan's offer saying that if I worked in this movie, I would have been lynched.'

Speaking to the media, Aishwarya had said, 'I am actually in a catch-22 position. Though I am a new actress, I was also compared to senior actresses". Ash says that if I did a film, I would have been teased saying, "Look, Aishwarya Rai is doing what she used to do during her modelling days." Like keeping your hair straight and always open, posing on camera wearing mini skirts. Anyway the hero leads the actress at the end of the film. If I had done 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', I would have had to listen comments.

Aishwarya got karan johar's support after nearly 17 years of this rejection. Aishwarya appeared in Karan's directorial movie 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' in 2016. Aishwarya starred alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in the movie.
