New Delhi: What a big problem type 1 diabetes is becoming in India. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), there were more than 6.7 million deaths from diabetes worldwide last year due to diabetes. The deaths were of people aged between 20 and 79 years. The latest report by the IDF shows that the number of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes is increasing rapidly around the world. As of 2021, more than 12.11 lakh children and adolescents worldwide were suffering from type 1 diabetes. More than half of them are under the age of 15. The highest number of indians is also among them. More than 2.29 lakh children and adolescents in India have type 1 diabetes.
There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes occurs at a young age. The person suffering from this needs an injection of insulin to survive. There is no concrete treatment either. At the same time, people with type 2 can be treated through medicines and therapy, but they also need insulin injections. The numbers show that the number of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes is increasing rapidly around the world. Last year, more than 24,000 new patients of type 1 diabetes were reported in India. That is, more than 65 children and adolescents became victims of type 1 diabetes. That is why the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued new guidelines for patients with type 1 diabetes. These guidelines of the ICMR have come at a time when once again the cases of corona have started to accelerate. People with diabetes are at a higher risk of getting corona infected.
What is the status of diabetes in India?
According to the latest report of the IDF, 7.4 crore people in India are suffering from diabetes. India is at number two in the world, with the most diabetes sufferers. By 2045, the number of people suffering from diabetes is estimated to reach 12.5 crore. More than half of the diabetes patients in India are those who are not getting treatment. Out of the 7.5 crore people with diabetes, 3.94 crore or more than 53 per cent of the patients are not being treated. In India, more than 2.29 lakh people under the age of 20 are suffering from type 1 diabetes. This figure is the highest in the world. Then, the UNITED STATES and Brazil come in. 1.57 million people in the United States and 92,300 in Brazil have type 1 diabetes. In 2021, there were 6.7 million deaths from diabetes worldwide. The highest number of 1.4 million deaths occurred in China. This was followed by 7 lakh deaths in the US and 6 lakh in India. There were more than 4 lakh deaths in Pakistan and over 2 lakh in Japan.
