Lucknow: The hijab controversy that started in Karnataka has now started spreading across the country and Muslim fundamentalists are seeing it as a golden opportunity. The rally was organised by Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh and Aliah University in Kolkata in support of Muslim girl students. The rally raised slogans of Allah-hu-Akbar and also attempted to provoke the majority.

The students of AMU protested with posters in support of the hijab and shouted slogans of Allah-hu-Akbar. On Wednesday (February 9), the protesters were on their way from the university's duck point to Baba Syed Gate but were stopped by the security personnel of the university on the way. Arif Tyagi, a student leader of the university, said that a big agitation will be held on February 12 in support of the hijab. Arif said in a threatening tone that the voice of this protest will go all over India and also outside India. "If we talk about Islam, we will surely answer even if we have to answer with a stone instead of a brick. If needed, we will do it too. 'The protesters say that the girl students have been insulted by preventing them from wearing hijabs in the classroom, and this has made their blood boil.'

Around 500 students of Kolkata's Aliah University protested in the Park Circus area in support of the hijab. Most of the students, who were part of the protesters, were wearing hijab/burqa. The protesters say that the hijab is part of their religion and the Constitution of India allows for religious freedom. They allege that right-wing forces want to go back to the Middle Ages without a hijab. This dispute, which started in January in Udupi, Karnataka, has spread to many parts of the state and spread to other states as well. In Shimoga, Karnataka, two groups came face to face in support of the hijab/burqa and in opposition to the hijab. Some people supporting hijab/burqa started pelting stones at people wearing saffron scarves. Two people were also reported to have been injured in the stone-pelting.
