Kolkata: Leading academicians from across the world have written a letter to President Draupadi Murmu against Visva Bharati University Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty in West Bengal. The President is the ex-officio principal of the Visva-Bharati Central University. Around 300 professors, academicians, researchers and students of prestigious institutions have written to her, accusing her of harassing Nobel laureate Amartya Sen to appease the BJP.

According to the report, the letter to President Murmu alleged that Visva-Bharati Vice-Chancellor Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen was being harassed to appease the BJP. The President has been requested to intervene in this matter. "There is an ideological difference between Professor Sen and the current government in India. Taking advantage of this, the Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati is behaving like this to please the BJP. She has urged that you control the Vice-Chancellor as the guardian of the university."

This letter has caused a stir in the world's education sector. Most of those who stood by Amartya Sen and against the vice-chancellor are from abroad. There are a lot of people in the country. The Nobel laureate has received support from academics. Among those who have signed the letter are James K. Bowes, a renowned professor of economics in Massachusetts, Jeanine Rodgers, a professor at the International Institute of Development Studies in Geneva, and Prabhat Patnaik, a professor of economics at JNU.
