Guwahati: The country's Home Minister Amit Shah has paid tribute to General Lachit Borphukan of Assam's erstwhile Ahom kingdom on his death anniversary today. Shah tweeted and wrote, 'My tribute to Veer Lachit Borphukan on his birth anniversary. I appeal to my youth to know about this great general of the Ahom Army, who drove the invaders to protect the motherland in the battle of Saraighat. His bravery will continue to inspire generations to come.'

Borphukan was a commander in the erstwhile Ahom kingdom and is remembered for his tremendous leadership in the battle of 1671 at Saraighat. In this war, the attempt to capture Assam by the Mughal army was thwarted. He died almost a year later. The battle of Saraighat took place on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati.

Borphukan was born to Tai Ahom in Seung-Long Mong, Charaido. His religion was Furrelung Ahom. Lachit Borphukan received education in humanities, scriptures and military skills. He was given the position of Ahom Swargadev's flag bearer (Soldhar Barua), which was equivalent to a personal assistant. Prior to his appointment, he held the posts of Superintendent of the Royal Mews of Ahom King Chakradhwaj Singh, Chief of the strategically important Simulgarh Fort and Superintendent of the Royal Equestrian Guard (or Dolaksaria Barua).
