Chennai: In a remarkable archaeological find, a construction project in Kolirayanpettai village near Papanasam, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, unearthed a cache of rare Panchaloha murtis and artifacts dating back to the illustrious Chola era. Mohammed Faizal, the property owner, had initiated construction for a house when workers unexpectedly stumbled upon these ancient relics.

During routine digging operations, workers heard the unmistakable sound of metal beneath the earth. Further excavation revealed well-preserved Panchaloha murtis and ceremonial artifacts believed to have been utilized in worship rituals during the Chola period.

The discovered murtis depict revered deities such as Somaskandar, Chandrasekharar, and Thirugnanasambandar, offering valuable insights into the religious and cultural practices of the Chola dynasty. Authorities from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) were promptly informed and arrived at the site to secure and evaluate the artifacts.

"The significance of these discoveries cannot be overstated," remarked an ASI official overseeing the excavation. "They provide invaluable insights into the religious and cultural practices of the Chola dynasty, renowned for its contributions to art and architecture."

This discovery adds to Tamil Nadu's rich archaeological landscape. In 2017, near Pattukottai in Thanjavur district, workers uncovered 14 ancient murtis and 7 pedestals crafted from Panchaloha. Similarly, in 2021, in Perambalur district, six Hindu murtis were discovered during foundation digging.

The ongoing excavation in Kolirayanpettai village holds promise for uncovering additional artifacts shedding light on ancient Tamil Nadu's cultural practices. Preliminary assessments suggest the artifacts date back to the Chola period, from the 9th to the 13th century CE, known for its artistic and religious advancements.

Historically, such artifacts were buried for protection during periods of social upheaval or the collapse of temple structures. The discovery has sparked local interest and pride, underscoring Tamil Nadu's role as a custodian of India's diverse cultural heritage.

As the excavation progresses, authorities stress the importance of caution and respect for the site's historical significance. The artifacts will undergo further examination and preservation efforts to ensure their safeguarding for future generations.

The unearthing of these ancient treasures enriches our understanding of Tamil Nadu's past and reaffirms its status as a custodian of India's cultural heritage. Researchers and historians eagerly anticipate uncovering more treasures, shedding light on the Chola dynasty's vibrant history and enduring legacy in South India.
