England: Recently, 1st test of the Ashes series 2023 was played between England and Australia at Edgbaston, wherein England lost the match by 2 wickets on Day 5.

James Anderson has lamented the "kryptonite" lifeless Edgbaston ground in the Ashes opener and worries that if the pitches for the rest of the series are flat and slow, he won't be able to help England battle back against Australia.

The 40-year-old right-arm seamer, who needs 14 more wickets to become the first fast bowler to record 700 Test dismissals, wasn't at his best during the opening Ashes match. In the entire Test match, he worked determinedly for 38 overs (both innings combined), but only managed to claim one wicket.

Anderson even went so far as to imply that if the other four Tests' pitches mirror this one in terms of being unresponsive for pacers, his Ashes career may be done. "If all the pitches are like that I'm done in the Ashes series," he wrote in his Daily Telegraph column. "That pitch was like kryptonite for me. There was not much swing, no reverse swing, no seam movement, no bounce and no pace,” he wrote.

“I’ve tried over the years to hone my skills so I can bowl in any conditions but everything I tried made no difference. I felt like I was fighting an uphill battle. There was a bit of rustiness but I gave it everything I could. Having played for a long time, I realise you can’t take wickets every game. Sometimes it is not your week. It felt like that for me," he said.
