Andhra Govt to rejoin PM Fasal Bima Yojana

NEW DELHI: The  Andhra Pradesh government has decided to rejoin the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY, following discussions between the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, and the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Shri Tomar praised the state government for taking this action. With this significant choice, the state's more than 40 lakh farmers would have their crops insured against natural disasters.

The Central Government has simplified and made PMFBY convenient based on the states' proposals. The Central Government collaborates regularly with the States to enhance the welfare of farmers, bring them prosperity, and modernise agriculture, Shri Tomar said.

Shri Reddy praised the Central Government for reintroducing PMFBY in the state during the meeting. The State Government has decided to offer crop insurance coverage to the State's farmers under the PMFBY following discussions with the Center.
The PMFBY will be put into effect by Andhra Pradesh starting in the Kharif 2022 season. The Central Government is committed to empowering farmers nationwide, including those in Andhra Pradesh, by ensuring their sources of income and livelihood and to achieving Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision of an independent India and an independent farmer. 

The Central Government revamped the programme in February 2020 with new features, including voluntary enrollment for all farmers, expanded use of technology in yield estimation, risk coverage to choose for payment of the insured sum to the States according to the option and current risk profile, and a provision of 3% for administrative costs.

On July 7, a delegation led by Shri Manoj Ahuja, the Union Agriculture Secretary, also presented the programme to the Chief Minister.

 From Kharif 2016 to Kharif 2019, PMFBY and the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS) were successfully implemented in Andhra Pradesh.
