The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the State Election Commission while hearing the appeal of the Andhra Pradesh government which is a big relief for the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The state government had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against a decision of the High Court. In its decision, the High Court rejected the ordinance to reduce the tenure of the Election Commissioner from 5 years to 3 years.

The High Court also quashed the state government's order to appoint retired Judge V. Kanagaraj as the new SEC. Retired bureaucrat Nigmagadda Ramesh Kumar was reinstated as the head of the State Election Commission. On April 10, the state government amended the Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, to reduce the tenure of the SEC from 5 years to 3 years, suddenly removing Ramesh Kumar from the post.
