Another employee of the closed Cachar Paper Mill in Panchgram, Hailakandi district, in south Assam, has died, allegedly due to a lack of medical treatment. Mohan Singh, a 62-year-old Binnakandi inhabitant in the Cachar district, died on Thursday. Singh, who was suffering from several difficulties, died on his way to Shillong for treatment at 3.20 p.m. on Thursday.

As a result, the death toll at the paper factory has risen to 99, including four suicides. Late Singha failed to arrange requested treatment on time, according to Manobendra Chakraborty, head of the Cachar Paper Mill Employees Union, due to nonpayment of wages and other statutory dues for the previous 59 months.

Chakraborty claimed that he did not get a single penny from his valid retirement dues during the course of his whole military career, forcing him to die without receiving the necessary treatment on time.

Cachar Paper Mill in Panchgram, Hailakandi district, and Nagaon Paper Mill in Jagiroad, Morigaon district, both Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited operations, have been out of service since October 2015 and March 2017, respectively. The employees at the two mills have been without pay for several months. After much deliberation, the government has chosen to sell both mills.

In September of last year, the Assam government purchased the assets of Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd's two closed mills and provided a relief package of Rs 570 crore to its employees.
