The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking an order to stop conversions in the name of superstition, inducement, witchcraft, and financial gain. The Supreme Court said that there was no reason why no person above the age of 18 years can choose his religion. The Supreme Court allowed the petitioner to withdraw the petition. At the same time, he asked the Central Government to take a stand. BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay had filed a case in the Supreme Court.

The same petition stated that forced conversion is not only a violation of Articles 14, 21, 25 but is also against the principle of secularism, an integral part of the basic structure of the Constitution. The petition had sought an order to find out the possibility of enacting a conversion law by appointing a committee to prevent misuse of religion.

One of the evils of society is to convert by inducement: The petition states that it is regrettable that the Centre and the states have failed to ban conversion sorcery, superstition, and deceit, while it is their responsibility to ban it under Article 51A. The petition said that conversion by inducement is one of the evils of the society against which strict action should be taken. The petition said that the Centre can enact a law to prevent such cases with a minimum punishment of three years, which can be extended to a sentence of 10 years and a fine.
