Mangalagiri: TDP politburo member Varla Ramaiah, in a letter sent to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman on Friday, said that the AP government and police forces are resorting to gross violation of fundamental rights and Article 19. They are suppressing all voices of dissent and democracy at every step. If the guilty officials are not made accountable for their repressive actions, they will further erode the democratic values in the state.

He urged for an inquiry into the illegal arrests of peaceful protesters. Several FIRs were registered against TDP leaders at Kotabommali, Dendulur, Pulivendula and Bommanahal police stations. The TDP leader said, had called for a state-wide protest on August 28 against the steep hike in petrol and diesel prices in Andhra Pradesh. The ruling party removed the police force and accordingly TDP leaders, cadres and general public were arrested.

Condemning the repressive tactics of the government, he said that not only were FIRs registered under various sections at many places, but some leaders were illegally arrested, detained and later released. The TDP leader expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation and the increasing excesses of the ruling YSRCP and the police force. He appealed to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate and take appropriate action against those responsible for registering such harsh cases.
