Apple Expands Reach in India’s Streaming Market Through Airtel Partnership

Apple is set to enhance its presence in India’s entertainment industry by teaming up with Airtel, one of the country’s leading telecom providers. This new collaboration will offer Airtel's premium customers free access to Apple’s music and video streaming services, marking a significant move for Apple in a price-sensitive market.

As competition intensifies in India’s $28-billion entertainment sector, with an $8.5-billion merger involving Reliance and Walt Disney under regulatory scrutiny, this partnership aims to capture a larger audience. Airtel has announced that Apple TV+ will be included with its premium WiFi and Postpaid plans. However, details regarding the deal’s financial aspects and the associated costs have not been disclosed.

Currently, Apple TV+ holds a minor share in the Indian market, dominated by competitors like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, and JioCinema, owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani. To boost its market share, Apple is emulating its rivals by bundling its streaming services with telecom plans.

Starting later this year, Airtel’s premium broadband and postpaid users will enjoy Apple TV+ and Apple Music as part of their subscription. In alignment with this partnership, Airtel will phase out its music app, Wynk, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Airtel, with around 281 million subscribers in India, is significantly behind Reliance Jio, which boasts approximately 489 million subscribers.
