Apple's suite of AI-based enhancements, known as Apple Intelligence, is expected to debut starting with iOS 18.1, rather than the initial release of iOS 18. According to Mark Gurman, who cites unnamed sources, the core iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will still launch as scheduled in September 2024. However, the first Apple Intelligence features are projected to arrive in October as part of the 18.1 update.

Apple Intelligence encompasses new capabilities such as intelligent notification management, summarizing voice messages and texts, new writing tools, ChatGPT integration, an improved Siri assistant, and more.

Upcoming Release: iOS 18 and iPadOS 18
The releases of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will proceed as planned, supporting a wide range of older and new devices. iOS 18 will be compatible with iPhones from the 2018 iPhone XR and later models. Similarly, iPadOS 18 will support 2018 iPad Pro models, 2019 and later iPad Air and iPad mini models, and 2020 or later iPad models.

Delayed Rollout: Apple Intelligence
The Apple Intelligence features will not be available on devices earlier than the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. This delay provides developers with additional time to integrate Apple Intelligence into their applications and allows Apple to address any bugs in the technology.

Apple has hinted that these AI features will roll out in stages throughout the last quarter of 2024, possibly extending into early 2025. Developers can expect to see the new AI features in iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 betas soon, although testing may take longer due to the limited number of compatible devices.

Separate Yet Interconnected Technologies
Since its announcement at the WWDC in June 2024, Apple has treated iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence as interconnected but distinct technologies. The keynote presentation separated these components to highlight the specific device requirements for Apple Intelligence.

As a result, the initial shipments of the upcoming iPhone 16 models will include iOS 18 but will not feature Apple Intelligence. Apple may focus on familiarizing users with iOS 18 features before introducing the AI enhancements in subsequent updates.
