New Delhi: Former CM of Madhya Pradesh and BJP leader Uma Bharti was born on 3 May 1959 in a Lodhi Rajput family. Uma Bharti is an Indian politician and has been India's Minister of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. She has been the CM of Madhya Pradesh. Maharani Vijayraje Scindia of Gwalior brought her into politics. Along with Sadhvi Ritambhara, she played a major role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. During this, her slogan was "Ramlala Hum Aayenge, Mandir Wahi Banayenge".

She joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at a young age. She contested the Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 1984, but lost. She was elected Member of Parliament from Khajuraho parliamentary constituency in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections and retained the seat in 1991, 1996, 1998. In 1999, she was elected Member of Parliament from Bhopal seat. In the Vajpayee government, she held several state-level and cabinet-level positions in Human Resource Development, Tourism, Youth Affairs and Sports and finally Coal and Mines.

In the 2003 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, the BJP under her leadership won a three-fourth majority and she became the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. In August 2004, she resigned as Chief Minister after an arrest warrant was issued against her in connection with the 1994 Hubli riots. After which Uma Bharti was arrested and put in jail, although she was released after a few days.
