Itanagar: The counting dates for the assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim have been revised to June 2, coinciding with the Lok Sabha election results announcement. Originally scheduled for June 4, the change aims to streamline the electoral process. Both states will witness assembly polls on April 19, aligning with the conclusion of their assembly tenures on June 2, 2024.

The Election Commission unveiled the polling schedule for Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday, setting April 19 as the voting day for all 60 constituencies. In a significant move, the BJP nominated candidates for all seats, introducing 16 fresh faces while sidelining three incumbent ministers. Chief Minister Pema Khandu seeks re-election from the Mukto constituency, emphasizing continuity in representation.

Similarly, in Sikkim, elections for the 32-member assembly will be held on April 19, with vote counting rescheduled to June 2. Presently, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) holds sway, led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. The party commands 17 seats in the assembly. Opposition contender Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has fielded candidates for six constituencies, with former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling vying for a record ninth term from Namchi-Singhithang.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha and assembly elections, a fierce battle ensued between SKM and SDF, resulting in a notable shift of power. Despite the SDF's longstanding dominance, SKM secured a majority with 17 seats, paving the way for Prem Singh Tamang's ascension as Chief Minister.
