Puri: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will carry out a preliminary inspection and technical survey of the Ratna Bhandar, the treasure chamber of Puri’s Srimandir, on September 18, following state government approval. The Srimandir administration has been informed, and public darshan (viewing) at the Puri Jagannath Temple will be temporarily suspended on this date to facilitate the survey.

Dr. Arabinda Padhee, Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA), announced on social media that a team led by the Additional DG (Conservation) and experts from the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) will conduct the inspection. The decision to conduct the survey on September 18 was made after discussions with SJTA officials and concerned Sevayats, in accordance with the government-approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). The Jagannath Temple will close to devotees from 1 pm on September 18 to allow the ASI to conduct the inspection. Dwaraphita niti will be performed at 2 am, Mangala Alati at 3 am, and public darshan will be suspended from 1 pm onwards.

The Srimandir administration has already shifted all ornaments from the Ratna Bhandar to a temporary strong room, with empty almirahs and chests also relocated. The survey is being conducted using the latest technology before any repair and conservation work. The administration has requested the ASI to take all necessary precautions to avoid any damage to the temple during the maintenance and repair work. The Chief Administrator has urged the ASI to expedite the conservation and repair of the Ratna Bhandar, emphasizing the use of modern techniques and expert professionalism to ensure timely completion.
