Guwahati: The first phase of polling for 47 assembly seats in Assam has been held on March 27 and polling will be held on April 1 (39 assemblies) in the second phase and April 6 (40 assemblies) in the third phase. Meanwhile, BJP leader and Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani visited the state on Tuesday where she held a press conference in Guwahati, as well as addressing election rallies at Borbhag in Nalbari City and Gauripur in Dhubri City. Because of this, Irani targeted Congress a lot.

Speaking at a press conference in Guwahati, Irani said the Congress is so compelled that it has to resort to AIUDF to keep itself alive politically. she said, "It is the compulsion of the Congress to join hands with the AIUDF to survive. There is a saying 'the drowning is resorting to straws' but are they getting the support of each other? Can Assam build a good future?'' Irani said that these kinds of alliances are confined to politics only, do they fulfill any promise of development made to the people?

Terming the same Congress coalition partner AIUDF as a communal party, Irani said, "Don't spread communal disharmony among the people and don't make fight brothers." Assamese people will vote for the development and welfare of their families. She said the two opposition are trying to remove individuals from the politics of development. Congress was in power of Assam three times continuously from 2001 to 2016. Addressing her election rallies, she targeted Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra without naming them and said, "A few days ago, two members of the Gandhi family came to Assam. They do not know the Assamese culture and do politics only to save the family.”
