Guwahati: The results of recently-held Assam Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections will be announced today . The counting of votes for the council polls started from 8 a.m. on Saturday. The voting for this elections was conducted through the paper ballot in two phase. The first phase of the election was held on December 7 while the second and final phase was conducted on December 10.A total of 23,87,422 voters in the two phases exercised their franchise to elect their representatives for the local council.
According to the soruce, the counting will be held in ten subdivisonal headquarters in the four districts – Kokrajhar, Gossaigaon, Parbatjhora, Chirang, Bijni, Tamulpur, Bhergaon, Udalguri, Salbari and Mushalpur. The two-phase polls recorded an overall 77.9 per cent polling. Compared to earlier elections, the voters turnout this time was quite high. In the first phase, polling was held for 21 constituencies in Udalguri and Baksa districts. A total of 19 constituencies in Chirang and Kokrajhar district went to poll in the second phase on December 10.
The BPF, BJP, UPPL, Congress and AIUDF are the key players contesting the polls which had a total of 243 candidates in the fray.While BPF is seeking to retain its 15-year-old BTC regime, the BJP is eyeing to dethrone the regional party.BJP and BPF are alliance partners in the Assam government but both went solo in the BTC polls amid reports of a rift between them.
