Guwahati: On Saturday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that all new applicants for Aadhaar cards in the state must provide their National Register of Citizens (NRC) application receipt number. This move is aimed at addressing concerns about illegal immigration and ensuring that only verified residents receive Aadhaar cards.

Sarma highlighted that the number of Aadhaar applications in Assam exceeds the state’s population, which he attributed to potential discrepancies in citizenship status. By requiring the NRC application receipt number, the government aims to prevent illegal foreigners from obtaining Aadhaar cards. Sarma emphasized that the process will be stringent and challenging for new applicants. However, this requirement will not apply to the 9.55 lakh individuals whose biometrics were locked during the NRC process; they will still receive their Aadhaar cards.

The Chief Minister also announced plans to intensify efforts to identify illegal immigrants, citing recent apprehensions of Bangladeshis. Sarma, who has previously voiced concerns about demographic changes in Assam, promised to release a comprehensive white paper on the issue. Earlier, Sarma had expressed his intention to prevent "Miya" Muslims from influencing the state's demographic balance, asserting that such changes are undesirable and will be actively resisted.
