Guwahati: The counting of votes for Assam assembly elections has begun. Majuli is the most high-profile assembly seat in Assam from where CM Sarbananda Sonowal himself is trying his luck as an Indian Know Party (BJP) candidate. Assam CM is leading by more than 2400 votes in the Majuli Vidhan Sabha seat. Counting of votes for Assam elections is underway. In the early trends, the BJP alliance seems to be getting a majority.
Sonowal has held the post of Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Sports and Youth Affairs in the Modi government before becoming the CM of Assam. He was a contender for the CM's post in the Assam Assembly elections held in May 2016. He was sworn in as the 14th CM of Assam on May 24 after the party won. Sonowal got more than 49,000 votes in the Majuli assembly seat in the 2016 assembly elections. He had defeated Congress candidate Rajiv Lochan Pegu by a huge margin of 19,000.
Sonowal, a graduate from Dibrugarh University and an LLB degree from Gauhati University, is known as a dynamic young politician. He is also known as Jatiya Nayak, a name given by the state's oldest student body AJSU. The swearing-in ceremony of Sonowal was attended by several senior party leaders including PM Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah, and LK Advani.
