57 people declared as foreigners by the Foreign Tribunal in Assam and staying in Detention Camp for three years will be released conditionally soon. Earlier in August, ten declared foreigners were released for the first time. Officials have said that for the second time the Home Department has approved the release of the declared foreigners of six detention camps in the state.

Human rights worker Harsh Mander had filed a PIL in the apex court after seeing the misery of people living in detention camps. It was on this that the state government proposed to leave the foreigners conditional. Of the 335 foreigners declared to be in detention camps, who have completed more than three years, only 120 have applied for conditional release. The investigation of the application of the remaining applicants is going on.

Presently 1,145 foreign declared persons are present in six detention camps in the state. There are 177 declared people living in Karajad Camp, 273 in Gwalpada, 46 in Dibrugarh, 357 in Tezpur, 220 in Jorhat and 72 in Silchar. More than 26 foreigners declared dead in detention camps. One condition in the conditional release is that two Indian sureties will have to deposit one lakh bond each. Along with this, the address residing before the release has to be verified.
