GUWAHATI: A significant development is on the horizon as the Assam government unveils plans to construct a ropeway at the renowned Kamakhya temple situated atop the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the exciting news in a video released on X platform last Thursday. The state government's vision for the Kamakhya temple aims to usher in a new era, catering to the multitude of devotees who make their way to this sacred site from both within the country and abroad each year.
Following a comprehensive study conducted by the state authorities, preparations are in place to launch a ropeway service connecting Kamakhya railway station to the temple. This endeavor holds the promise of drastically reducing travel time for pilgrims and travelers arriving by train, by an impressive 55–60 percent, simultaneously amplifying the area's potential as a tourist destination.
The ropeway, designed with a capacity to accommodate 1,000 individuals per hour in both directions, is projected to complete the journey to Nilachal hills within a mere seven minutes. The state administration is targeting June 2026 as the completion date for this ambitious ropeway project.
Noteworthy is the Assam government's parallel intention to construct a corridor at the Kamakhya temple, reminiscent of the Kashi-Vishwanath Temple Corridor in Varanasi. This strategic move aims to significantly expand the existing open space encompassing the temple premises from the current expanse of 3,000 square feet to an expansive 100,000 square feet, thoughtfully distributed across three levels.
A senior government official revealed that the access corridor's width will undergo a substantial enhancement, evolving from its present dimensions of 8 to 10 feet to a more generous span of approximately 27 to 30 feet. This exciting development holds the promise of enhancing the overall experience for all who visit this revered site.
