Guwahati: The National Register of Citizens (NRC) does not name 200 sex workers in Assam's Silchar district. Most sex workers could not apply for NRC because their family members did not let them use their documents. Silchar has a red light area. It is also known as Fourteen Nabar Gali. Fourteen Nabar Gali is the largest brothel in Northeast India. There are more than one thousand sex workers here. Most of them have reached here by being victims of human trafficking.

A social activist says that like Sonagachhi in Kolkata, sex workers in the Redlight area of Silchar have neither a voter ID nor an Aadhaar card. NGOs and women lawyers are struggling to prove these sex workers as Indian citizens. District Law Services Authority member Tuhina Sharma said that sex workers are also part of society. They too have every right to be Indian citizens.

Sharma further said that it is a matter of regret that we do not accept him with respect. We usually go for the AIDS control program and free health camps in Redlight area. Sharma has said that in the year 2017, we tried to include sex workers in the voter list, but they do not have any personal papers.
